It seems Ford can already pop open the champagne at its Detroit Auto Show (NAIAS) stand, as the jury of the 2010 North American Car and Truck of the Year awards has chosen the Ford Fusion and the Ford Transit Connect as its respective winners for the two competitions.

This is definitely a major win, and one of the few times both awards go to a single carmaker. The Fusion hybrid has definitely made an impact in the US, and it’s quite surprising that the European-made (Transit Connect trucks are even made in Romania!) are that successful in North America.

Fusion’s contestants were the Buick LaCrosse and the Volkswagen Golf, while the Transit’s rivals were the Chevrolet Equinox and the Subaru Outback. Ford also won last year’s Truck of the Year award with its F-150.

The Transit Connect has double the fuel economy of full size vans. Jury member Ken Gross said that the Transit Connect is “comfortable to drive; it turns on a dime, and its broad sides permit billboard ads for your business or someone else’s. Kudos to Ford for strip-mining its European operation.”
